Can’t wait to open school: UNICEF-UNESCO

It has been 18 months since the outbreak of coronavirus. UNICEF and UNESCO have called for the reopening of educational institutions, saying that the education of millions of children is being disrupted. UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Four and UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azul made the call in a joint statement on Monday (July 12th).

Henrietta Four and Audrey Azul said, “Primary and secondary schools are closed in 19 countries today. As a result, over 15 crores, 80 lakh students are being affected. It can’t go on. In case of closure, schools should be at the end, and schools should be at the forefront in case of reopening. Not all teachers and students can wait to be vaccinated in case of schools reopen. Corona can’t wait to go to zero to open the school.

The joint statement said governments have closed schools several times as part of efforts to keep the infection under control. Closed for a long time, even when the epidemic situation does not claim it, still closed. Often, measures to close educational institutions have been taken as a first step rather than a last resort. In many cases, schools were closed but bars and restaurants were open.

In a joint statement, Henrietta Four and Audrey Azul said the loss of children and young people due to not being able to go to school may never be compensated. From learning disabilities, their physical and mental health and educational attainment, and social involvement will affect emotional distress, violence, and abuse to lack school-based food and immunizations or declining social skills. Parents and childcarers are also suffering. Children around the world are forcing parents to quit their jobs, especially in countries where family vacation policies are non-existent or limited. That is why it is not possible to wait for the reopening of schools to attend in person. Corona can’t wait to go to zero to open the school. They clearly proved that primary and secondary schools are not among the major driving forces of the infection. Meanwhile, in most cases, it is possible to deal with the risk of Kovid-19 infection in schools by adopting appropriate mitigation strategies. The decision to open or close a school should be based on risk analysis and considering the epidemic situation in the community.

The joint statement said all teachers and students could not wait to be vaccinated in case of schools were reopened. Globally, the vaccine deficit has hit low- and middle-income countries hard. In this situation, priority will be given to the front-line workers and the people at risk of serious illness and death in immunization. All schools should make it compulsory for students to attend school in person as soon as possible, without making it compulsory to be vaccinated before entering school.

In a joint statement, Henrietta Four and Audrey Azul said, “There will be a meeting on global education tomorrow, Tuesday (July 13). With this meeting in mind, we urge decision-makers and governments to prioritize the safe opening of schools to avoid generational disasters. For the vague advantage of the present, our future is being held hostage by closing schools. We must be more considerate when it comes to prioritizing. We can safely reopen schools and must.”

The first corona patient was identified on March 8 in Bangladesh. Since then, the educational institutions have been closed since March 16. The holiday has been extended in a few steps. As the educational institutions have been closed for a long time, the education of about four crore students is being disrupted.

A recent private study found that 19 percent of primary and 25 percent of secondary students are at risk of learning or coronary heart failure due to coronavirus closure. In such a situation, the educationists are urging a long-term plan to compensate for this loss of education. Many of them have also suggested opening educational institutions in areas where there is little or no infection.
